Ways to prevent jealous behavior in dogs

Wayne Hunthausen veterinarian and owner of Westwood Animal Hospital is a pet behavior consultant and has some tips for us on how to prevent your dog from becoming jealous of other pets, new babies in the home, and even your new sofa.


Jealousy is an emotion and typically refers to the negative thoughts and feelings of insecurity, fear, and anxiety over an anticipated loss of something that the person values, particularly in reference to a human connection.


Jealousy often consists of a combination of presenting emotions such as anger, resentment, inadequacy, helplessness and disgust.



Signs your dog is feeling jealous or insecure





  • Whining, barking, growling

  • Nudging, pawing

  • Jumping up, pushing in between



Tips for bringing new pet into the home



  • Make the situation safe

  • Avoid competitive situations(food, treats, toys, attention, resting areas)

  • Take social control

  • Structure

  • Consistency

  • Review obedience

  • Nothing in life is free program

  • Ignore pushy behavior

  • Exercise
